This piece might go into my forever favourite ones written about mortality and death. I love how the entire passage flows. It's a damn shame they didn't publish this; it's succinct and aptly written, as always. My favourite line: "The jaws of the trap are set with every birth and sprung again and again with neither malice nor morality anywhere in the reckoning." I can think of a few literary icons that would applaud you for that sentence cause it tickled my literary bone jussttt right.
Man, this really hit some chords with me. I so remember being so scared of death when I was a child and the journey into gentle understanding. This felt like a painting about coming to an understanding with grief.
Beautiful, Chuck.
Thanks pops!

So glad you liked it, Ari. And thank you for telling me!

I'm so glad it resonated!
You’ve always been the next great American writer to me. More evidence for the list.
You were one of the first people to ever make me feel like that could be true someday. Means the world to me that you're still reading!!
